VAGE presents the first edition of our monthly Pop-Up Gallery featuring emerging and established local and international artists. The exhibitions take place on the second Thursday of every month.

THE EXHIBITION //
The artists were asked to research and be inspired by a piece of ancient graffiti. Using modern day materials and referencing current issues, each artist has created a piece that reflects the historic image they have selected.

THE HISTORY //
Graffiti is recorded to date back as far as 40,000 years. Without the carvings from pre-existing cultures, contemporary research would have a limited understanding of the average man in ancient civilizations. A bias of wealth and power. The average man in the contemporary world bids for a voice within society using the modern materials and tools that are available to them. GRAFFITO explores these current approaches.

Meaning of Symbols: Rain

"Rain is nourishment for the earth and is known as the water of life. Rain takes many forms and can be anything from a gentle sprinkling and light watering of the earth, up to a torrid downpour and possible flooding; life giving on one hand and potentially death dealing on the other. Rain is a very serious affair, especially wherever water is scarce and/or crops are growing. A wonderful, (surviving) example of this seriousness is the world famous Native American rain dances, created to induce rain. 

Rain drops can symbolize heaven's tears and the accompanying LIGHTENING can be seen as heaven's anger (for example, thunderbolts were the favored weapon of Zeus, etc.). Rain is a symbol for tears, sorrow, anger, cleansing, renewal, forgiveness and more -- usually on a heavenly, worldly or very large sort of personal scale. 

Meaning of Symbols: Roster

"Symbol meanings of the Rooster (cock or cockerel) are as vibrant and diverse as the rooster's plumage. Rooster symbol meanings are all about fanning out with brilliance, and showing the world your shimmering facets of personality.


Most cultures embrace the Rooster as a solar symbol, and a sign of illumination, with the exception of the Nordic and Celtic cultures. Celtic and Norse lore describe the Rooster as a creature of the Underworld. Specifically, the cock served as a messenger of the Underworld, screeching out warnings in danger, and calling out for the souls of the fallen in battle.

Thought I´d provide you with some of the meanings of symbols and structures that always reoccur in my paintings.

"If the center line of the Z slants left it indicates the path of the soul - the journey the spirit takes and the walk that is made on within the spirit. If the middle line in the Z slants to the right, this indicates forces that call loudly to a person's soul - passions or issues that compel a person to take a chosen path of life. The two horizontal lines (top and bottom - connecting the middle slant line) indicate the journey of life and the understanding as we walk upon the grounding plane of Earth - we area also living the life of Sky. These lines definitions are common to Plains Native Peoples of North America."
